Tata Motors To Begin Manufacturing Rovers In India
Back to Main PageIt starts…
![]()
Ever since Tata Motors bought Land Rover and Jaguar in 2008 auto workers in Britain have understandably been nervous about their jobs. Now, apparently, they have reason to be. Or do they?
As is often the case, the company has found that building in India is cheaper than building in Britain. And there are tax advantages. And shipping savings. All this in preparation of selling the brand more aggressively in India, where early sales have shown much promise even at the higher price.
The Pune plant, previously used by Mercedes Benz, has the capacity to building about 3,500 vehicles a year. Keeping in mind that sales were up 64% for the quarter from the prior year’s quarter, this plant may only be stemming the tide, which means that British automakers may have nothing to worry about after all.
