Eight members of the Dallas-based group 'Texas Rovers' loaded up their Land Rovers with food and first aid and drove out to Harris County's Wade Road Service Center. Their mission? To get essential goods to Hurricane-ravaged Precinct Two seniors, stat.

The aptly-named John Doner, a group member, called the county's Protection Services to inquire about the needs in the aftermath of Hurricane Ike. Gail Miller, Assistant Deputy Commissioner in Precinct Two was grateful for the help and said the aid could be best utilized by Homebound for Seniors, a service managed by Precinct2gether, a non-profit organization in charge of eight senior and community centers in East Harris County.

The value of the donation is in the neighborhood of $5,000, and that’s not including the gas it took to get it there; which must have been a significant cost due to the local spike in prices. Commissioner Sylvia Garcia greeted the Texas Rovers at Wade Camp, the distribution center for all Precinct locations during the hurricane recovery period. "Our seniors are a top priority these days. And your help is so timely" said Garcia.

Two contingents, one from Austin and one from Dallas, met in East Harris County for the presentation of goods. "We coordinated everything through a blog on the Internet" said Doner, "and people responded immediately."

Their mission statement says “Texas Rovers is a dedicated Club for Land Rover owners and enthusiasts in Texas and Arkansas. The Club is made up of singles, couples, and families who come together to enjoy the great Texas outdoors and to share their enjoyment of Land Rovers.”

They seem to have left out the part about having a heart as big as all Texas. Well done gang. (Who says good deeds go unnoticed?)
