New reports from Autocar indicate that the next generation Land Rover Defender may be hitting production lines sooner than originally thought – perhaps as soon as 2016.
The Land Rover Defender in its current form will be discontinued next year but Land Rover Marketing Director Phil Popham hinted that its replacement might not be too far away. The new Defender plans to pick up where its predecessor left off, providing an unparalleled level of durability and the "biggest breadth of capability" of any vehicle in the lineup. Autocar reports that Land Rover has signed off on the vehicle's new design though there's no word yet as to when the latest Defender will make its public debut.
Autocar expects the Defender to use an aluminum frame and to offer a range of engine variants including a new Ingenium four-cylinder turbocharged diesel and petrol engines as well as V6 engines. 8 and 9-speed automatic gearboxes will be standard - no word yet on manual transmission options.
