Land Rover Discovery Vision Concept to Debut at New York Auto Show

Land Rover Discovery Vision

We recently posted an article on the Land Rover Discovery Sport, a new vehicle projected to fit into Land Rover’s new Discovery family of vehicles. Now there is news of a second car that will bare the Discovery name - the Land Rover Discovery Vision, and the concept vehicle is set to make its debut at this month’s New York Auto Show.

At first glance, the Discovery Vision more closely resembles the new line of Range Rover vehicles than it does the traditional Discovery vehicles we have grown to know and love. These new design features are drastic and believed to be incorporated into all three of the new Discovery vehicles.

While much remains unknown about the Discovery Vision, Auto Express reports that the vehicle will feature a suite of new technologies like “gesture control” and and a “smart glass” information system which includes the transparent bonnet that has been setting the blogosphere abuzz in recent days. Perhaps most exciting of all is the new Clever Remote Control Drive system, which allows a “driver” to operate the vehicle at low speeds while outside of the car, a feature which is sure to delight off road enthusiasts (that is, of course, if Land Rover can convince them to buy a Discovery Vision).

Chief Creative Officer and Design Director Gerry McGovern had the following comments:

“This car encapsulates our vision for a Discovery family. Rather than produce one car that fits all, we wanted to do a family that can broaden our reach, as the Evoque did with Range Rover. We’ll reach a bigger market by taking the essence of the Discovery and presenting it in different scales.”

McGovern goes on to say that in the near future the SUV market will yield over 20 million sales per year, so it seems clear that the goal with the new Discovery line is to maximize “mass appeal.”

“We want to give the whole range greater appeal, and this design language goes much further in differences than, say, between the Range Rover and Range Rover Sport. There’ll be a clear difference between the three pillars, but the Discovery will be closer to the Range Rover (in premiumness and finish) than the Discovery will be to the Defender.”
